Things most people don’t know exist

Apple and Google both let you name someone who can reach your account if you can’t — almost nobody knows those settings are there. Most banks let you add a trusted contact. And a family safe word is still one of the best defenses against a call that sounds exactly like your grandchild. We set all of it up with you.

Someone I trust knows how to get into my email. Email resets almost everything else — it’s usually the most important one to share. Someone I trust could get into our bank without me. Bills and income don’t pause for a bad week. My passwords are somewhere another person could actually find and use. A password only you know is a password nobody else can use when it matters. I’ve named someone on my Apple or Google account who can reach it if I can’t. Apple’s Legacy Contact and Google’s Inactive Account Manager exist for exactly this — almost nobody turns them on. My phone could be unlocked by someone else if it had to be. Most other accounts reset through the phone. If nobody can unlock it, nothing else works either. My family has a safe word for calls asking for money in a hurry. The “grandchild in trouble” call is built to make you skip this step.
